I hear you Abby is essentially presented, as a one-dimensional flat static character. That miraculously manages to pull, off a complete shift in character after killing Joel. We aren't really shown, how or why she is able to transform so quickly, or really shown her grappling with Joel's murder.

So, not only did Abby lose a father when Joel killed him at the end of the original The Last of Us game to save Ellie, but the entire group lost hope of making a cure, which explains why all of them were willing to join Abby on her quest for revenge.Tommy does not die in The Last of Us 2.
